About 70 percent of couples who married in the 1990s made it to their 15th anniversary (excluding those in which a spouse died), which reflects an increase from about 65 percent of those whose marriages began in the 1970s and 1980s.

And what about people who married in the 2000s? Well their divorce rate is lower, and if the trend continues, nearly two-thirds of marriages will never involve a divorce, all according to data from Justin Wolfers, a University of Michigan economist (who contributes to The Upshot, by The New York Times).

However, not as many people are getting married as they used to. This isn’t a bad thing, just a fact that more of today’s couples are not following the traditional path and have forged a more modern way of their own. The marriage rate per 1,000 people dropped from 8 to 6.8, according to the CDC.

The rate of divorce in the northeast region, which of course Queens, New York City falls, is among the region with the lowest divorce rates in the nation. And also according to the CDC, states in the Northeast, however, like our own New York is at a 2.9 rate per 1,000 people, giving it an “honorable mention” for low regional divorce rates.

It will certainly be interesting to see what the trends are when new sets of data and statistics are released involving divorce rate in the nation and more specifically in Queens and the northeast region.

Information on the rate of divorce for baby boomers, which seems to be an upward trend as traditions and gender roles are questioned and challenged more than in the past. Also of interest is the divorce rate for same-sex couples as compared with hetero couples. Are divorce patterns similar or different for these different sets?
